In the Orcas SP1 release we released our XML Schema Explorer . In the Visual tudio 10 PDC VPC we shipped our first rev of the next set of planned features for our XML Schema Designer. Check out the Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4.0 CTP VPC here . Over the next few weeks I’ll be posting in more detail about the features in the CTP. - Tim Laverty PM, Data Programmability XML Tools

When designing WPF Windows with data (or as I usually refer to them WPF "Forms") we have many options on how we want to load the data and bind our controls. Depending on where the data is coming from and how it's being used there are a lot of possibilities. DataContext "Direct" Suppose we have the following simple window defined and we've set up data binding on our text boxes to the corresponding properties on a Customer object. < Window x : Class =&quo ... Beth Massi and Yang Xiao did a great Channel 9 session that centered on XML Literals and the XML Schema Explorer. Check the session out here . One thing that doesn’t come across in the video is that the Explorer can be used with any XSD set, not just with XSDs associated w/ your VB project. See our previous blog posts here and here on the Schema Explorer for more detail. …and thanks to Beth & Yang for doing the video! Tim Laverty PM, Data Programmability XML Tools

In this short 10min video, I interview language architect Paul Vick about what industry trends he would think about while designing the Visual Basic language. Some of these trends have motivated features in the next version of the Visual Basic language (VB 10.0), such as interop with dynamic languages. Others are things the team is currently thinking about, and plans to address in future versions. These include concurrency, and "opening up the black box" to expose the Visual Basi ... [ read more ]

There are over 1100 people registered for the Silicon Valley code camp this year! Wow! That's a couple hundred more than last year. This is a free event people, so there's no excuse not to come out to Foothill college this year. And it's not all Microsoft technologies (of course not --we're in Silicon Valley for heaven's sake!) so there's a lot of variety of talks and a diverse crowd of developers to network with. "My dog has no type." "How does he smell?" " Awful! "
Two of the new features of VB10 -- array literals and multi-line lambdas -- are interesting from the language perspective because their expressions have no type! This article is for language lawyers. I remember at my very first undergraduate computer science lecture, the lecturer Frank King handed out the class list and asked for corrections. One student raised his hand, apologized for being pedantic, and said that his name had an "å ... [ read more ]

"My dog has no type." "How does he smell?" "Awful!"
This article originally was called "Expressions with no types" but that was a misleading title. This article is really about expressions which have a "quantum superposition" of several types: that's to say, the expression on its own could be one of several different types, but then the immediate context of that expression makes it collapse down to just one of those types.
Superposition types are used in two ... [ read more ]

When running VB.Net or C# code, often it’s useful to call native code. One way is using PInvoke. (for other ways, see How fast is interop code? )
For example, you can call GetWindowText to get the title of a window. To get it’s managed signature, you can use this code from http://www.pinvoke.net/default.aspx/user32/GetWindowText.html
